Song

Running on Spiritual Empty

WearinessWeaknessBurdenRest

The first line of this song names a treadmill many of us know too well. We work, answer, serve, improve, achieve, and still wonder whether we have done enough to deserve peace. The grind may look admirable from the outside, but the heart underneath is exhausted from trying to prove that it belongs. The singer is not merely tired from a long week; he is tired of using effort to purchase worth. Jesus does not stand beside that treadmill with a louder command. He gives an invitation. He calls the weary and burdened to come to Him, not after they have become impressive, organized, or spiritually productive. That matters because a striving heart will try to turn even rest into a performance. We can feel guilty for slowing down, compare our pace with someone else’s, or read the Bible as another task to complete. Christ’s rest is different. It begins with receiving, not achieving. Coming to Jesus does not always change every demand on your calendar by morning. It changes the place from which you carry those demands. You are no longer trying to make a name for yourself; you are learning to live from the name God has already given you: beloved in Christ. Work may still be necessary. Responsibilities may still be real. But they no longer get to answer the question of whether you matter. Notice the honesty of the lyric: “just to feel like I’m enough.” Today, do not hide that hunger under busyness. Bring it directly to the One who welcomes the weary. Let Him expose the false bargain that says you must earn the right to breathe. Rest is not quitting on faithfulness. It is trusting that Jesus is enough before you have produced anything at all. His welcome is a gift, not another assignment to complete.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28

[Verse 1]
I've been grinding nonstop just to feel like I'm enough
Chasing peace in every late night and every almost-love
My prayers feel quiet, like they never make it out
And I'm running on spiritual empty right now

[Pre-Chorus]
I used to think if I just tried harder it would change
But even the strong ones eventually break
I'm out here running on spiritual empty

[Chorus]
But those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength
They will mount up with wings like eagles
They will run and not grow weary
They will walk and not faint
I'm still running on spiritual empty
But I'm learning how to wait

[Verse 2]
I've watched my friends burn out chasing wins
I've felt that same crash when the high wears thin
I've been the one pretending I still had gas in the tank
White-knuckling faith while my soul just sank

[Pre-Chorus]
But You don't get tired and You don't grow weak
You're the same God who holds me when I can't even speak
So I'm laying down the pressure that's been crushing me

[Chorus]
Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength
They will mount up with wings like eagles
They will run and not grow weary
They will walk and not faint
I'm still running on spiritual empty
But I'm learning how to wait

[Bridge]
I don't need every answer tonight
I just need You close in the middle of this fight
If You're the God who never runs dry
Then meet me right here where I've got nothing left to try

[Final Chorus]
Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength
They will mount up with wings like eagles
They will run and not grow weary
They will walk and not faint

[Outro]
I'm still running... but I'm not running alone
Not on empty anymore
I'm waiting on You, Lord
