Give It a Rest

This song confronts a quiet but exhausting pattern: bringing God a running list of grievances, rehearsing worries, and calling bitterness “just being honest,” while missing the rest Jesus freely offers. Before you can serve honestly, it helps to look honestly at your own heart. Scripture gives us a command for exactly that. 2 Corinthians 13:5 says: "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?" Paul's command is not meant to produce fear or endless introspection. Healthy self-examination brings clarity, humility, repentance, and deeper assurance. It protects us from two equal dangers: presumption ("I'm fine because I said a prayer once") and despair ("I'll never measure up"). The goal is to see whether the life of Christ is truly present and producing fruit — and few fruits are more telling than a servant's heart. Use this guide alongside the seven days of this devotional — ideally in one unhurried, quiet hour before the Lord. Guiding Principles for Healthy Examination: Begin with the Gospel. Your acceptance with God rests on Christ's finished work, not on the quality of your self-examination. Start from the place of already being loved if you belong to Him. Use Scripture as the mirror. Feelings rise and fall; the Word of God does not. Let specific passages describe the marks of genuine faith. Look for direction, not perfection. Genuine faith produces a new trajectory. Ask whether there is real movement toward Christ and away from known sin over time. Invite the Holy Spirit's searchlight. Pray Psalm 139:23-24 and then listen. The Spirit often brings specific things to mind with gentle or firm clarity. Examine both public and private life. Pay special attention to what only God and you see — the hidden places where compromise often settles. Bring what you find into the light. Confession to God (and, when appropriate, to a trusted believer) starves hidden sin and opens the way for cleansing. End with faith and obedience. Examination that only produces more examination has become unhealthy. Move toward specific repentance, trust in the blood of Jesus, and concrete steps of obedience. On Repentance & Hidden Sin: Use these questions slowly and honestly before the Lord. The question is not "Am I perfect?" but "Is there living evidence that Christ is in me?" Is there any sin I am currently protecting, justifying, or hiding? When the Spirit convicts me, do I quickly agree with Him, or do I argue, minimize, or delay? Are there areas of my private life (thoughts, habits, screens, relationships) that I would be deeply ashamed for others to see? On the Presence of Christ: Do I see evidence that Jesus is actually changing my desires, not just my outward behavior? Is there a growing hatred of the sin that once felt normal or enjoyable? Am I more aware of my need for mercy now than I was a year ago? On Fruit: Over the last year, has love for God and for people increased, stayed the same, or decreased? Is the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) becoming more visible in me, even slowly? Do the people closest to me see consistent evidence that I belong to Christ? On Rest & Security: Am I resting in Christ's finished work, or am I still trying to feel "good enough"? Is there anything I am treating as my real security (reputation, ministry, knowledge, morality, Christian identity) instead of Jesus Himself? Closing Question: If I stood before Christ today, would the overall direction of my life show that I have truly turned to Him? How to Respond to What You Find: If these questions expose something, the healthy response is not despair. It is to come into the light: Confess specific sins honestly to God (1 John 1:9). Where appropriate, confess to a trusted believer (James 5:16). Renounce the hidden thing and ask the Lord to cleanse and free you. Receive again the full forgiveness purchased by the blood of Jesus. Take one concrete step of obedience in the area the Spirit has highlighted. Thank God that His kindness leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). A Simple Rhythm: Many find it helpful to set aside a quiet hour (or a half-day) periodically — monthly is a good starting point — and walk through these questions with an open Bible and an open heart. A lighter version can be done weekly. The aim is not to become your own judge, but to let the true Judge search you so that you may walk in greater freedom and reality with Him. A Final Word: Self-examination is a means of grace when it leads us back to Christ. The same Lord who calls us to examine ourselves is the One who gave Himself for us. He is both the standard and the Savior. Bring whatever the light reveals to Him. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." — Psalm 139:23-24
