When the Water Let Me Go
FreedomSufferingHopeTestimony
An Americana country-folk testimony ballad about a man running from a life gone wrong who is caught in a violent storm and flood. As the water takes everything he could hold, he discovers the one thing that won’t let go — God’s hand. The storm strips away his false security, a still small voice tells him to lay his burden down, and by morning he steps into wreckage that somehow smells like a world reborn. He comes out changed when the water lets him go.
"He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters."
A song for the road you're on.

When the Water Let Me Go Dirt Road Gospel Music DirtRoadGospelMusic.com [Verse 1] The sky went dark at noon that day Like somebody pulled the light away Wind hit hard against the old Ford door And the rain came sideways across the road I’d been running from a life gone wrong With a half-packed bag and a broken song Every mile marker washed out of sight And the river kept rising through the night [Pre-Chorus] I held that wheel till my hands went numb Whispered, “Lord, if You still hear me, come” [Chorus] ’Cause storms don’t knock, they don’t wait outside They tear through the places we try to hide They take the roof, they bend the frame They leave us standing there calling Your name But somewhere between the thunder and dawn I found out I wasn’t walking alone When the water took everything I could hold Your hand was the one thing that wouldn’t let go [Verse 2] I used to think I could build my peace Out of paid-off bills and a set of keys A good straight road and a steady plan A little pride in these two hands But the flood rolled in through the cracks I missed Carried off every certainty I had kissed And there in the dark, with nowhere to run I heard a still, small voice say, “Son” [Pre-Chorus] “You don’t have to be strong tonight Just lay your burden down and let Me fight” [Chorus] ’Cause storms don’t knock, they don’t wait outside They tear through the places we try to hide They take the roof, they bend the frame They leave us standing there calling Your name But somewhere between the thunder and dawn I found out I wasn’t walking alone When the water took everything I could hold Your hand was the one thing that wouldn’t let go [Verse 3] By morning the clouds had torn apart Sun found a way through the broken dark I stepped outside where the field lay torn But the air smelled clean like a world reborn There were branches down and a fence gone loose Mud on my boots and nothing to prove But I felt a peace I had never known Like grace had made that wreckage home [Bridge] You spoke once and the waves lay still You speak now, and You always will Not always by keeping the hurt away But by standing beside me through every wave I may never know what the hard rain means Why some prayers take so long to breathe But I know the hand that holds the sky Held on to me when I thought I’d die [Final Chorus] ’Cause storms don’t knock, they don’t wait outside They tear through the places we try to hide They take the roof, they bend the frame They leave us standing there calling Your name But somewhere between the thunder and dawn I found out I wasn’t walking alone When the water took everything I could hold Your hand was the one thing that wouldn’t let go [Outro] No, Your hand was the one thing That wouldn’t let go And I came out changed When the water let me go
