Ain't No Love in My Old Life

TestimonyLoveFreedomIdentity

Temptation often speaks in a small voice. “One won’t hurt you” sounds reasonable because it does not ask for a ruined life all at once. It asks for one drink, one message, one click, one memory revisited, one compromise hidden from everyone else. The song knows that this whisper is not innocent. It comes dressed as relief while carrying the history of what it has already wrecked. Paul begins by removing the shame of isolation. Temptation is common to humanity. Being tempted does not mean you are uniquely broken or that your freedom in Christ was fake. Yet he also names the faithfulness of God. The moment of pressure is not a sealed room with no exit. God provides a way out so His people can endure without surrendering themselves to the old master. The way out is often practical and unglamorous. It may be leaving the place, throwing away the number, calling a sponsor or trusted friend, handing over the keys, changing a route home, going to bed, confessing the craving before it grows, or putting distance between yourself and what has become dangerous. The exit may not feel dramatic, but it is mercy. Do not wait for the temptation to become easier before you take it. Take the way God provides while your hands are still able to move. This passage does not tell you to face temptation with solo confidence. God’s faithfulness can arrive through community, accountability, recovery tools, counseling, and a church that knows your real name. There is no honor in standing near the fire to prove that you are free. Wisdom learns the old life’s patterns and refuses to make provision for them. Today, identify the whisper that has been speaking to you. Do not negotiate with it. Tell God the truth, name the exit already in front of you, and take the next concrete step. The temptation is real, but it is not your lord. God is faithful, and the door out is not imaginary.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2 Corinthians 5:17

[Verse 1]
Heard a knock 'bout a quarter to two
Same old smoke through the back screen door
Whiskey whisperin' "one won't hurt you"
Like it never wrecked me before
Them demons all got my old address
They come dressed like a Friday night
Devil grinnin' in my headlights
Sayin' "climb on in, it's alright"

[Chorus]
Ain't no love in my old life
Just a spark and a house built of pine
It comes scratchin' 'round my back door
Like a stray that I fed one time
I done read how that story ends
It left me face down on that floor
Ain't no love in my old life
But it keeps tryin' to sneak through my door

[Verse 2]
Poured the bottle out in the driveway
Burned the number, watched it turn black
But temptation's got a thin blade
And it don't need much of a crack
Monday mornin' I'm standin' steady
Friday night it comes back to call
Same sweet lie in a new dress
Swayin' out where the porch light falls

[Chorus]
Ain't no love in my old life
Just a spark and a house built of pine
It comes scratchin' 'round my back door
Like a stray that I fed one time
I done read how that story ends
It left me face down on that floor
Ain't no love in my old life
But it keeps tryin' to sneak through my door

[Bridge]
So I nailed a new lock on that old frame
Hung a cross where the deadbolt turns
Dead men don't answer knockin'
And the man I was don't live here no more
Jesus lives in this house with me now
And we don't open up that door

[Final Chorus]
Ain't no love in my old life
Just a spark and a house built of pine
It can scratch all night at my back door
That stray ain't eatin' this time
I done read how my story ends
And it ain't face down on that floor
Ain't no love in my old life
And it ain't comin' back through this door
