We Watched Him Love

LoveGraceTestimony

This song confronts a costly calling: a believer can admire Jesus’ love from a safe distance — singing about mercy, agreeing with it, even being moved by it — while resisting the overlooked person in front of them. Before you can love honestly, it helps to look honestly at your own heart. Scripture gives us a command for exactly that. 2 Corinthians 13:5 says: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?” Paul's command is not meant to produce fear or endless introspection. Healthy self-examination brings clarity, humility, repentance, and deeper assurance. It protects us from two equal dangers: presumption (“I'm fine because I said a prayer once”) and despair (“I'll never measure up”). The goal is to see whether the life of Christ is truly present and producing fruit — and few fruits are more telling than a love patterned after Christ’s. Use this guide alongside the seven days of this devotional — ideally in one unhurried, quiet hour before the Lord.

"Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren."
1 John 3:16

[Verse 1]
We followed Him down dusty roads
Watched Him stop for the ones nobody chose
He touched the leper, looked the outcast in the eye
Said “Come sit with Me” while the holy ones walked by

[Pre-Chorus]
We kept waiting for the fire and the fight
But He kept choosing mercy every night

[Chorus]
We watched Him love
When it cost Him everything
We watched Him love
The ones the world left on the side of the road
He didn’t raise His voice, He just opened His hands
And we stood there learning what we never understood
We watched Him love

[Verse 2]
He washed our dirty feet on the night He knew
He’d be betrayed by one of us before the morning dew
He broke the bread and poured the wine
Said “This is My body… given for you”

[Pre-Chorus]
We still didn’t get it, standing in the dark
While love was bleeding out inside His heart

[Chorus]
We watched Him love
When it cost Him everything
We watched Him love
The ones the world left on the side of the road
He didn’t raise His voice, He just opened His hands
And we stood there learning what we never understood
We watched Him love

[Bridge]
We watched Him hang
With thieves on either side
Still finding one more soul to save before He died
“Father forgive them” was the last thing that we heard
And somehow that was louder than any word

[Final Chorus]
We watched Him love
When it cost Him everything
We watched Him love
The ones the world left on the side of the road
He didn’t raise His voice, He just opened His hands
And we stood there learning what we never understood
We watched Him love
Yeah, we watched Him love

[Outro]
And now we know…
That’s the only way to go
